HOW IT WORKS: CATALYTIC CONVERTERS? The catalytic converter was first introduced in 1975 in order to help meet clean-air laws. The basic function of the catalytic converter is to take pollutants within the exhaust system and convert them into less harmful gas emissions before they leave the engine. The converter most often looks like a honeycomb with many passageways through it. It can also be many small ceramic beads with a catalyst coating.

Chemical reactions take place to reduce the emissions. There are three main emissions produced by a car engine. They include nitrogen gas, carbon dioxide and water vapour. While it is thought carbon dioxide does play a factor in global warming, there are three other emissions produced by car engines. Although they are in smaller amounts, they are much more harmful.

They include: carbon monoxide, a colorless, odorless, poisonous gas; hydrocarbons or volatile organic compounds, which produced smog because of evaporated, unburned fuel; and nitrogen oxides, which produced smog and acid rain in addition to being harmful to the human mucus membranes. Catalytic converters basically reduce pollution by causing a reaction inside. The emissions come into contact with a metal catalyst - platinum, rhodium, palladium, or even gold in new converters. Most vehicles have what is called a three-way catalytic converter, as there are three emissions that it reduces. Two different reactions occur inside the catalytic converter.

The first is the reduction catalyst. When nitrogen oxide molecules come into contact with platinum and rhodium, the metal takes the nitrogen atom out of the molecule, leaving the oxygen alone. The nitrogen then bonds together so that instead of having nitrogen oxides, there is oxygen and nitrogen. Then comes the oxidation catalyst. Hydrogens and carbon monoxides are burned over platinum and palladium. Remaining oxygen then bonds to create carbon dioxide instead of hydrocarbons. The third stage is the control system, which references the exhaust stream in order to control the fuel injection system. Near the top of the catalytic converter is an oxygen sensor. It determines how much oxygen is in the exhaust, and relays the information to the engine computer, which then either increases or decreases the amount of oxygen according to what is needed. This ensures that that there is enough oxygen for the oxidation catalyst. Catalytic converters fail if they become clogged or poisoned. A mechanic can determine if it is plugged in a couple of different ways. One way is to remove it and check if there is a change in engine performance. The second way is to temporarily remove the oxygen sensor and check if there is a change in engine performance. You can usually tell a clogged converter by a vehicle that won't accelerate properly or if there is a drop in gas mileage. A catalytic converter can also fail if there are bad exhaust valves on the engine or plugs that cause fuel to overheat the converter.
